Let me ask you:
What’s your own definition of success? I mean, is buying the latest cars and “oppressing” your neighbor your own idea of success? Or is success all about getting that prestigious certificate from Harvard or getting married to the dude or damsel of your dreams?
Success is one word that gets tossed around a lot, but do you know what it really means? While some see success in terms of accumulating material possessions, some see it from the window of professional achievement. Yet, others cannot see beyond the attainment of personal goals, whatever those may be.
You see, success is not trying to be what another person is. It’s not trying to go where others have been. Actually, it’s discovering who you are, what you’re good at, and being the best you can at it.
You can have people who have been where you desire to be – you may even choose them as mentors — but you cannot measure your success by achieving what they have achieved. If you do, chances are you’re shortchanging yourself that way.
Success is far from trying to be one up on your neighbors or colleagues. It doesn’t thrive around unhealthy competition. To get a clear idea of the true measure of success, you need to provide real answers to questions like:
How close am I now to who I am meant to be?
Or,
What am I doing now compared to what I was designed to do?
Overall, understanding the meaning of success is success in itself. Understanding what success means [for you] can help you conserve and focus your energy.
A while back, one of my mentees graduated from the university and, like everyone else, desired to be successful.
I told him he had to be diligent and patient in whatever thing he was interested in pursuing. Soon enough, I noticed he had a flair for photography, so I encouraged him to start small and be focused.
Of course, he had to overcome several hurdles — but I told him to keep the picture of the future he had in his mind, and keep going…
Eventually, he became the Special Assistant to the Governor of Ekiti State on Photography, and now follows the Governor everywhere he goes taking his pictures.
