This sounds pretty cliché but do you know your goal in life?

While most people believe that life is random and just happens, you have to deliberate about the life you live and how you live it. It is easy to talk about life and certain things like they do not matter, but we all know that they do when the buck does.

So what is a goal? A goal is a definition of a plan or proposed plan. Goals help individuals and organizations streamline their choices and follow the right course of action.

Every person and organization can have different goals in life, but it is important to note that goals stem from an understanding of what may be referred to as purpose, i.e., your main vision in life. To not just discover but realize your goals, the following steps are required:

  1. 1. Discover Your Purpose:

As hinted earlier, a goal is only achievable when it stems from an understanding of purpose. What then is “purpose”? We can refer to purpose as a deliberate or preplanned course of action for a person, place, or thing. It is like a blueprint for life, and trust me; everyone has one.

Think of it this way, before you go on a journey, you plan concerning where you are going and what you want to do, right? The same thing with life, you don’t just walk out and let it happen to you.

It is also crucial that you write down your vision/purpose; amongst other things, this will help you remember and track it as you progress.

  1. 2. Be Yourself:

Like the great philosopher Socrates said, “to thine own self be true,” this could not have been better said. You need to realize that you are unique and that works for others may not necessarily work for you. You have things you like/dislike, preferences, skills, training, education, etc., that are specific only to you, whether you want it or not. Accepting and realizing this would go a long way for your goal(s).

  1. 3. Break It Down:

So you now understand what purpose is about and who you are specifically? Good, the next step is to break it down. You have to cut your vision and purpose into tiny bits and group them. For example, I want to be the best in music. First, I need to understand what music is, and if I have the skills required, how long would it take? What else would I need for this journey? All these questions would guide you to clear answers, and don’t forget to write them down.

  1. 4. Get a Mentor:

Although most people do not realize this, it is virtually impossible and tough to achieve anything without standing on someone’s shoulder. Anything you want to write has already been written about, the things you would like to do have been attempted, you need to associate with people who are already making strides in your industry or field and learn from them.

  1. 5. Be Realistic:

You need to be honest with your goals; you must understand your strengths and weaknesses and how you can best overcome your challenges. You need to establish a timeline for accomplishing your goals but be flexible and open to unexpected circumstances; you also need to realize that you may fall or be set back but can achieve if you try.

  1. 6. Stay Committed:

We all know this is easier said than done, but you must be true to what you have discovered if indeed you have found it. So much will be required, and your success will be determined by how much you keep at what you do. Remain focused on your vision, write it clearly and seek help; see when you do!
